TraitGenetics addresses an increasing demand for molecular marker development and analyses in plant breeding and biodiversity research.
The company was established in 2000 by Dr. Martin Ganal and started to become operational in January 2001. TraitGenetics is an independent company that is exclusively owned by Dr. Martin Ganal and some key employees of the company. After more than seven years in business, TraitGenetics is meanwhile a profitable company with a large number of customers.

Areas of experience

TraitGenetics is specialized in the development and analysis of many types of molecular markers (predominantly microsatellites and SNPs) for biodiversity and plant breeding research. This includes the use of molecular markers for the construction of genetic maps, marker-assisted selection in large populations, the construction of molecular marker databases for plant variety identification and germplasm characterization as well as map-based cloning.

Scientific experience

The founder and CEO of TraitGenetics, Dr. Martin Ganal, has more than 25 years of experience in plant molecular marker analysis, molecular biology and genetics. Dr. Ganal has obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Tübingen, Germany. After that, he spent more than 6 years at Cornell University, New York, USA and more than 8 years at the Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) at Gatersleben, Germany. He is author or coauthor of more than 75 peer-reviewed publications in the field of plant molecular marker analysis.

The team of TraitGenetics consists of a blend of experienced scientists and technicians that have previously worked such areas as plant genetics, plant molecular biology, biodiversity research, human genome analysis and bioinformatics. Together, our scientists have more than 75 years of experience in the field of marker development, analysis and plant breeding. Currently the total staff at TraitGenetics comprises of approximately 25 people.

The customers of TraitGenetics are primarily nationally and internationally active plant breeding companies along with other biotech companies and public research institutes. Our main activities are currently serving customers within Europe with smaller business to companies and institutions in North America and Australia.

TraitGenetics is located on the top floor of the BioTech building adjacent to the Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben, Germany and is occupying nearly 900 m2 of laboratory, office and greenhouse space.
